Primary Care Physician - RESPONSIBILITIES (listed are included but not limited to)

  • The Primary Care Physician performs comprehensive medical history evaluations and physical examinations on patients ranging from pediatric to geriatric populations.
  • Diagnose medical conditions and order appropriate laboratory tests, imaging studies (e.g., X-rays), and other diagnostic procedures as needed.
  • Refer patients to external hospitals or physicians for services not available within the Indian Health Service Healthcare Delivery System.
  • Collaborate with other agencies or health facilities on behalf of patients and their families to arrange admissions to hospitals, rehabilitation facilities, and skilled nursing facilities.
  • Organize emergency ground and/or air medical transport as required.
  • Analyze clinical data, develop therapeutic programs, and communicate information effectively to patients and their families.
  • The Primary Care Physician provides support to patients and families in times of illness.
  • Maintain accurate and timely Electronic Health Records (EHR) with detailed clinical documentation, including diagnosis codes. Complete all EHR notes within 24 hours of patient encounters.
  • Prescribe medications and treatment therapies in coordination with nurses, pharmacists, and other healthcare personnel.
  • Follow up on treatment plans and monitor patient progress.
  • Provide ongoing individual counseling for common social and emotional issues.
  • Recognize the need for referral to a mental health professional when necessary.
  • The Primary Care Physician consults independently with medical and surgical specialists to discuss patient care and arrange referrals as needed to appropriate health facilities.

Primary Care Physician - REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be a Board-Certified or Board-Eligible Medical Doctor (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) in Family Medicine/Internal Medicine or certified by the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians.
  • Possess a current, valid, and unrestricted medical license to practice in any U.S. state, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory.
  • Must hold current Basic Life Support (BLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification are required.
  • Must have a minimum of 3 or more years of direct patient service.
