START (formerly the Addiction Research & Treatment Corporation or ARTC) began treating patients in a single building at 937 Fulton Street in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, and is now one of New York State's largest non-hospital providers of health and human services. For more than 40 years, START has offered treatment to over 40,000 self-referred patients throughout Brooklyn, Manhattan and The Bronx. Today, we continue to offer holistic care when treating those with an opioid addiction and co-occurring mental illness to transition our patients toward healthy and productive lives. In 1985, START added primary medical care including HIV/AIDS services and Hepatitis C and, in 2011, was contracted by the state to provide mental health care for juveniles in two detention facilities. Our seven community-based treatment programs use individual and group counseling with medical and behavioral health professionals to treat patients, and some clinics offer short-term, outpatient detoxification and a drug-free chemical dependency program for other non-opiate addictions.
