The San Antonio VAMC provides comprehensive acute hospital care, including medicine, surgery, and psychiatry. Gastroenterology at the Audie Murphy VAMC:

In conjunction with Brooke Army Medical Center and Methodist Hospital, San Antonio the Audie Murphy VAMC  is host to a comprehensive fellowship in gastroenterology built within the GI service’s clinical affinity areas of advanced therapeutic endoscopy, motility, hepatology, inflammatory bowel disease, and general gastroenterology. Our success at training and placing GI physician leaders into each respective service comes from our dedicated faculty's enthusiasm and passion for research, teaching, and mentorship.

Gastroenterologists here provide the delivery of quality patient care and evidenced-based standards of practice in the Subspecialty of Gastroenterology.  This includes direct patient care in concert with a GI Fellowship program in out and in-patient care settings. While advanced endoscopy and EUS skills are highly desired, they are not essential. Endoscopic skills in non-advanced endoscopy, small bowel endoscopy, and ancillary GI procedures are required. Experience in the treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases is highly desired. Skill and knowledge necessary to provide care to the level of age-specific diseases and the range of disease severity.  This includes the ability to identify patient needs and to provide the care needed to promote improvement.  Experience and confidence in providing moderate sedation for endoscopic procedures is required.  Provider will also have teaching responsibilities include the effectiveness in teaching, monitoring and coordination of educational activities - planning, evaluating and documenting of medical students, residents and GI Fellows.


Gastroenterologist - RESPONSIBILITIES (listed are included but not limited to)

  • Shall cover the range of Gastroenterology services as would be provided in a state-of-the-art civilian medical treatment facility and the standards of care shall be of a quality, meeting or exceeding currently recognized national standards.
  • Shall be responsible for providing an academic environment conducive to the training and professional development for residents rotating through the Internal Medicine/Gastroenterology Service.
  • Shall be responsible for complying with the Residency review documentation and ensuring that all notes and encounters are completed and shall appropriately document medical records in accordance with VA standards.
  • Shall also perform any administrative duties relative to documentation of resident training, as required and directed by the VA or designated representative.
  • Shall provide clinical direction to and oversight of residents/fellows consistent with current accreditation guidelines, clinical research, and protocol development.
  • Shall provide comprehensive clinical gastroenterology services including the full range of colonoscopy and esophagogastroduodenoscopy procedures.
  • An estimated 95% of time is involved in direct patient care.

Gastroenterologist - REQUIREMENTS

  • Must have ACLS and BLS certification.
  • Must be Board Eligible or Board Certified from any state, territory, Commonwealth of the United States, or the District of Columbia in good standing.
  • Must have a current, full, active and unrestricted DEA card.
  • Must have a current, full, active and unrestricted license from any state, territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia in good standing.
  • Must have Proof of Medical Liability Insurance.
