About the Facility – Whiteriver Service Unit
The Whiteriver Indian Hospital is located at Whiteriver, AZ on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation. The hospital is located about three miles north of Whiteriver and serves approximately 17,000 tribal members and other Native American communities around the area. Whiteriver hospital is designated as a Baby Friendly Hospital. The hospital is the Joint Commission accredited and staffed by 22 physicians, podiatrist, five nurse practitioners, five dentists, two optometrists and about 79 nursing staff members and is a 40-bed facility. This facility provides general medical, pediatrics, alcohol treatment, mental health, obstetric services and ambulatory surgery.

Emergency Physician - RESPONSIBILITIES (listed are included but not limited to)

  • Will serve as a Medical Officer, which involves the performance of Ambulatory Medical Treatment for emergency, surgical, and medical care services.
  • The ER Physician will provide comprehensive and continuing health and medical care services for adult and pediatric patients. The incumbent is expected to handle the full range of cases and problems in the ER, including the very difficult and complex cases. Cases are sometimes critical and require immediate decisions.
  • Will be interviewing and examining any patients seeking emergency care. Physicians will review past medical history and immediately request and/or perform diagnostic tests and examinations deemed necessary to obtain all possible information related to each case.
  • Will make preliminary diagnosis, direct, prescribe or provide treatment, or arrange for specialized care or patient referral as required. Physicians will base medical decisions upon information obtained and professional medical knowledge and skills.
  • Emergency Department physicians manage patients on the inpatient hospital ward overnight, from the hours of 1700-0700. Physicians will receive admitting privileges, will admit appropriate patients to the inpatient ward overnight, and manage all patients on the hospital ward as needed.
  • Will at times refer patients to appropriate medical facilities, providing full clinical information for care and diagnostic procedures that cannot be adequately provided at WRSU. Will coordinate and integrate information obtained into the ongoing Health Care Program at the Service Unit and ensure timely follow-up care as required.


Primary Care Physician - REQUIREMENTS

  • Education: Must have completed a residency in any of the following:
    • Emergency Medicine
    • Family Medicine
    • Internal Medicine
    • Other residency – with 1.5 years of Emergency Medicine experience.
  • Licensure: A current, valid, unrestricted license from any state is honored.
  • Certification: Must be board certified or board eligible in Emergency Medicine, OR have 1.5 years of experience in emergency medicine.
  • Must have current certification in BLS, ACLS, PALS, and ATLS.
